“Robin Williams” is an 8.5" x 11" acrylic and gel plate portrait created as a heartfelt tribute to the late Robin Williams—one of the most beloved and multifaceted performers of our time. I began this piece with the hope of completing it in time for Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, as both a celebration of his legacy and a reflection on the silent struggles many face. Robin was more than a comedic genius; he was a compassionate soul who used his platform to uplift others, from hiring homeless individuals on his film sets to tirelessly supporting causes through Comic Relief. His generosity, empathy, and boundless creativity left an indelible mark on the world.
The palette I chose—light blue, red, and yellow—is inspired by the iconic shirt he wore as Mork from Ork, a nod to his early, exuberant career and the youthful spirit he carried through every role. These bright colors wrap the piece in the joy and vitality he radiated. Yet, in contrast, the portrait itself shows him in his later years, contemplative and grounded. I wanted to capture the complex duality of someone who brought so much light to others while wrestling with inner darkness. It serves as a reminder that even the brightest lights can flicker in silence and that we must extend compassion and presence to one another—especially to those who seem to be doing just fine.
This piece is more than an artwork—it’s a message. A message to check in, to listen, and to hold space for the unseen battles our friends, loved ones, and even strangers may be facing. Robin’s life and legacy remind us of the healing power of laughter, but also of the importance of vulnerability and connection. With “Robin Williams,” I hope to honor his legacy while also encouraging open conversations about mental health and emotional well-being.
