Just finished my latest artwork titled "Mauri," an 8.5 x 11 inch acrylic on cardstock using a Gel Plate transfer technique. This portrait is of my beautiful cousin Maurita, and for this one I dove deep into an old school 1980s pop vibe. I gave her hot pink lips and eyeshadow that would make Cyndi Lauper proud, and set it all against a background of iridescent green and emerald starbursts. The backdrop was designed to echo the flash and fizz of the MTV era and the surreal glitch aesthetics of Max Headroom. It’s bold. It’s bright. It’s unapologetically retro.
I’ve written before about how amazing Maurita is (see previous post) so I won’t go on too long here. But the reason I leaned into the retro theme was to capture the feeling of our childhood together and how she still carries that same spark and spirit. Even now, there’s something timeless about her energy that felt right to express through a vintage lens. This one’s for you, Maurita. Love you cuz.
