The Separation
Acrylic and Ink on Cardboard

This artwork, measuring 8.5" x 12.5" and crafted with acrylic on cardboard, marks the inception of my "Blue Period," a creative journey spurred by the insightful suggestion of my friend Ken. It holds profound personal significance for me, an intimate piece that confronts me daily with its poignant reflection.

Originally conceived as an abstract composition, the painting took an unexpected turn when my marriage abruptly unraveled. In the aftermath, it morphed into a visual narrative, capturing the essence of our exchanges—the tumultuous, the unsightly, the painful, alongside moments of love and goodness. While the specifics of our dissolution remain private, it's a tale familiar to many, marked by a breakdown in communication and understanding.

This piece evolved into a documentation of our words, a portrayal of the frustration inherent in navigating complex emotions and the disintegration of communication. Each day, I transcribed the spoken words without attributing them to either party, recognizing that the essence lies in the shared experience rather than individual blame.

The hands depicted in the painting belong to my son, strategically untouched by the pervasive blue overlay. Placed seemingly at random, they unintentionally convey the image of his tiny hands embracing the rest of the artwork. I interpret this as a metaphorical attempt to hold our fractured unity or to provide solace to struggling spirits. It serves as a poignant reminder of the role children play in the midst of adversity.

As the artist, I acknowledge the uncertainty of the future. This piece encapsulates a shared human experience, urging us all to confront our present reality while holding onto the hope that tomorrow may bring a glimmer of improvement. If this painting resonates with those facing similar struggles, I hope it provides some solace and connection in the face of adversity.
