Sunflower Days
Sunflower Days
Acrylic on Paper
4” x 6”
2022

Sunflower Days embodies both personal memory and ecological mindfulness, weaving together the warmth of nostalgia with a quiet act of environmental resistance. At its heart is the image of a sunflower—rendered with a simplicity that mirrors the flower’s own unassuming beauty. The artist has long returned to sunflowers as a motif, not only for their universal appeal but also for their intimate connection to childhood, recalling afternoons spent planting them with a grandmother whose love of gardening deeply shaped his own.

What distinguishes this work, however, is not only its subject but its support. Created on recycled paper culled from the endless stream of unsolicited mail and product inserts, the piece emerges from a deliberate practice of transformation: turning waste into art. This decision reflects the artist’s broader shift toward sustainability, inspired by fatherhood and a growing awareness of the world we pass on to future generations.

Part of the ongoing Recyclart series, Sunflower Days is not simply a painting but a gesture—an invitation to reconsider the fate of the materials that fill our daily lives. Each work in the series is designed to leave the landfill behind and instead enter homes as gifts of color, joy, and reflection. Through this modest sunflower, memory and responsibility take root, blossoming into a symbol of hope and renewal.
