Mail Art South Florida
This latest painting is part of my ongoing participation in the mail art movement, where I continue sharing the culture, arts, flora, fauna and celebrated figures of south florida with artists across the globe. For this piece I used the gel block method to create a five inch by seven inch portrait of Celia Cruz, choosing a youthful image of her and rendering it in metallic gold, purple and brown tones. The result is a vibrant tribute to a legendary Cuban exile artist whose influence continues to inspire. You can view the full gallery at elvissantana dot com.
Celia Cruz rose to prominence in Cuba during the nineteen fifties as the celebrated voice of Sonora Matancera, mastering a range of Afro Cuban styles and earning titles such as La Guarachera de Cuba and the Queen of Salsa. After leaving Cuba in nineteen sixty she became a powerful cultural symbol for the Cuban exile community while expanding her international career in Mexico and the United States. Her collaborations with Tito Puente, Fania Records and the Fania All Stars led to some of the most enduring works in Latin music. With more than thirty million records sold, dozens of albums and numerous awards including Grammy and Latin Grammy honors, her legacy remains a defining force in music and popular culture.
