I Think I am Doing This Abstract Thing Wrong is a painting I made in October of twenty five and it marked the beginning of a new body of work that pokes fun at the seriousness and saturation of abstract art in the current market. I am very much a part of that world and in many ways part of the problem, which made the piece feel even more honest to create. Abstract work has become one of the most dominant and celebrated forms of art, while so many other practices are dismissed or overlooked. This painting grew out of a mix of doubt and humor that often shows up in my studio. The repeated red circles hold handwritten phrases that question my own process and challenge the weight we place on making abstract work feel important or profound.

As I worked, I leaned into uncertainty and allowed myself to question whether I was doing anything right at all. I wanted the words to feel slightly buried and imperfect, like intrusive thoughts interrupting the flow of paint. The rough white gestures and scattered marks move across the surface as if trying to fix or conceal something but never fully succeeding. The layers were scraped, dragged, and splattered until the surface felt honest rather than resolved. For me the meaning lives in that tension between intention and uncertainty, embracing doubt as part of the creative process and letting vulnerability remain visible instead of cleaning it away.
