A Father and Son
A Father and Son
Acrylic on Cardstock
8.5” x 11”
2025

I completed this painting just last month as a special piece created for some dear friends of mine. The composition is based directly on a meaningful photograph taken by the wife and mother of the two figures depicted. As soon as I viewed the original image she captured, I felt an immediate pull to translate it onto canvas. It perfectly embodies one of those fleeting, precious instances in life shared between a father and his son, representing a quiet connection that resonated deeply with me from the moment I saw it.

In the relentless hustle of surviving our chaotic modern existing, which is so often filled with endless phone notifications, exhausting long workdays, and constant political turmoil, we too often take these unassuming little moments for granted. We frequently lose sight of the inherent value of yesteryear and the profound beauty found in a simpler way of life. The reference photo felt like a literal window looking back into a time long gone, highlighting a pure interaction between parent, child, and nature that feels increasingly rare today. It serves as a poignant reminder to try and see the world again through innocent eyes untouched by the burdens of contemporary distractions.

The final artwork renders the pair as dark, heavily textured silhouettes against a hazy, atmospheric background of muted blues, grays, and earthy sand tones. They are walking hand in hand away from the viewer towards the water’s edge, framed by tall, rough grasses rising on the left side of the frame. I utilized a very tactile, almost distressed painting style to give the piece a distinct feeling of age and memory, emphasizing the timeless nature of their shared discovery on that quiet shore.
