I am excited to share my latest portrait titled Billy Corgan. I cannot say enough about the experience of hearing the Smashing Pumpkins for the first time when I was in high school. I was deeply immersed in the alternative rock scene back then and was already a massive fan of bands like Janes Addiction. Then came this distinct sound that was unlike anything else I had encountered in that era and it completely captivated my imagination.
It was a voice that could be high pitched and nasal or at times whiney yet full of a sudden surge of aggression and frustration. This vocal style was paralleled by instruments that changed in cadence from melodic beauty to fierce and raw musical power. That unique combination forever made me a fan and changed the musical landscape in the vein of legends like Joy Division and The Cure.
In creating this painting I aimed to capture the intensity of that raw musical power through heavy texture and bold contrast. I wanted the visual experience to mirror the sonic shift from melodic to fierce that defined their sound. The rough layers and expressive brushwork are my way of honoring the impact he had on my creative journey and the alternative music scene as a whole.
