Robert Gould Shaw First Pull
Robert Gould Shaw First Pull
Acrylic on Cardstock (Gel Plate)
8.5” x 11”
2026

This is my latest painting titled Robert Gould Shaw. I felt a deep responsibility to capture the weight of history and the quiet resolve of a man who led with such immense conviction. By focusing on the profile and the deep blues of the uniform I wanted to evoke a sense of duty that is both heroic and somber. The textures throughout the piece are meant to suggest the wear of time and the grit of the era he defined.

The technical process for this work involved a heavy emphasis on contrast and stippled textures to create a sense of graininess similar to an old photograph. I chose a vibrant pink and golden yellow background to push the subject forward and provide a modern energy to a historical figure. This juxtaposition between the traditional military attire and the abstract environment reflects how the legacy of the Fifty Fourth Massachusetts continues to vibrate through our contemporary world.

Every brushstroke in this portrait is an attempt to honor the sacrifice and the complicated bravery of the Civil War period. I hope viewers can feel the tension between the stillness of the pose and the chaotic beauty of the surrounding colors. It is a privilege to explore such a significant historical narrative through my own creative lens and to keep these stories alive for a new generation. Thank you for taking the time to engage with this tribute to a truly pivotal leader.
