More Into the Wild
"Berry (First Pull)" stands as a compelling initial exploration into the spirit of a beloved companion, marking the beginning of a dedicated three part portrait series for a friend. This first version was intentionally crafted with the same high energy brushwork found in my rock and roll series, attempting to translate that intensity into the likeness of a dog. The composition features a warm palette, where deep oranges and ochres provide a glowing backdrop for Berry's watchful face. While I eventually transitioned to cooler tones and palette knife techniques for the final versions, this specific iteration retains a raw and painterly charm that captures the developmental stages of the creative process and the evolving vision for the series.
The piece is a testament to the experimentation required to truly capture the essence of a subject, highlighting the beauty found in the transition from one style to another. The use of bold, dark outlines and stippled details around the eyes and snout gives the dog an attentive and soulful expression, emerging from a background of textured, fiery splatters. This work celebrates the incredible affinity required to care for animals day in and day out, reflecting the shared passion and hard work found at the heart of a dedicated dog sanctuary. Although it represents a different stylistic direction than the later pulls, the striking contrast and the visible history of the brushwork make it a vital part of the story behind the gift, honoring both the pet and the enduring friendship of those who look after them.
