Sweet Erica marks the second entry in my ongoing four part portrait series dedicated to one of the most steadfast supporters of my work. In an age of fleeting digital interactions, she stands out by taking the time every single day to engage, comment, and share my creative journey. We discovered early on that we are kindred spirits with a deep shared affinity for rock and roll, an intense devotion to Halloween, and a mutual love for the macabre beauty found in gothic art. This series is my way of honoring that rare level of support and the genuine connection that can flourish between an artist and those who truly appreciate the craft.
For this particular installment, I chose to work from a selection of photographs she provided, and this specific image immediately captured my attention. While the first portrait in the series reimagined her as a classic Frankenstein creation, this work feels significantly more dialed back and intimate. The composition focuses on a natural and serene expression, moving away from theatrical character work to reveal a more personal side of the muse. It was important for me to balance the more fantastical elements of the series with a piece that felt grounded in her true essence.
The technical execution of the painting relies on a delicate balance of gel plate work and soft color washes. I utilized vibrant pink tones on the cheeks to provide a warm and lifelike glow. The background features a striking contrast of deep black and teal, accented by a bold red vertical stripe that adds a touch of modern graphic energy. By combining these detailed textures with a more traditional portrait style, I wanted to create a work that feels both timeless and deeply personal to our shared artistic language.
