With Catrina Shades I wanted to blend the iconic imagery of the Day of the Dead with a touch of modern mystery and vintage flair. This piece represents a marriage between traditional folklore and a rock and roll attitude that feels right at home in my collection. By giving this elegant figure a pair of bold red sunglasses I am inviting the viewer to see the macabre through a different lens. It is about celebrating the beauty in the afterlife while keeping one foot firmly planted in the stylish rebellion of the past.

The composition relies on a striking contrast between the delicate blue patterns of the sugar skull makeup and the deep saturated reds of her eyewear. I focused on building a textured background that feels weathered and timeless much like the stories that inspire this holiday. There is a certain confidence in her posture that suggests she is not just a symbol of mourning but a guardian of culture and cool. This painting is a tribute to those who embrace their history while never being afraid to add their own unique spin to the narrative.
