This piece was partially inspired by the statement made by Billie Eilish during the 2026 Grammys regarding the fact that no one is illegal on stolen land. Her comment sparked a significant dialogue about migrant rights and historical injustice which served as the perfect catalyst for this work. I intended for this painting to act as a direct challenge to the ideas of property and historical origin that define so much of our modern world. By asking the viewer to consider the legitimacy of the land we claim to own I am seeking to highlight the contradictions within our social and legal systems.
I chose a gritty and layered visual style to complement the weight of the message using bold yellow and blue tones to make the text jump off the canvas. The lettering created by hand gives the words a sense of urgency and a personal touch as if they were written in a moment of sudden realization. The dark and textured background serves as a foundation that represents the complex layers of history we often overlook. It is my call to recognize the shared humanity that exists beyond the artificial lines drawn on a map. I hope that this painting serves as a visual anchor for a necessary dialogue about justice and the truth of our collective past.
