"Turning Saints Into The Sea" is a powerful mixed-media exploration of one of the most iconic anthems of the modern era. As my second attempt at capturing the likeness of Brandon Flowers, this portrait serves as a visual interpretation of the emotional turbulence found within "Mr. Brightside." The title, pulled directly from the song's lyrics, reflects the chaotic transition from innocence to the depths of jealousy and disillusionment. By layering the portrait over the literal lyrics of the song, the piece creates a physical dialogue between the music and the man who brought those words to life.

The aesthetic of this work is intentionally fractured and raw, utilizing a combination of screen printing and expressive washes of pink and crimson. The text acts as both a background and a structural element, with the verses and chorus bleeding through the subject’s face to suggest that the music is inseparable from the artist. The heavy, dark textures and distressed edges evoke a sense of frantic energy, mirroring the driving rhythm of the track. It’s a study in how a specific melody can define a persona, rendered with a gritty, urban feel that emphasizes the song's enduring impact.

By revisiting Brandon Flowers through this lens, I wanted to move beyond a standard likeness and dive into the atmosphere of the music itself. The use of the lyrics as the literal canvas provides a foundation of "Jealousy" and "Destiny," forcing the viewer to engage with the narrative while observing the portrait. The interplay of the bold black ink against the softer, bleeding pigments represents the inner conflict described in the lyrics—the struggle between holding on and letting go. This painting stands as a tribute to the storytelling power of The Killers and the visceral emotions that "Mr. Brightside" continues to evoke decades later.
