More Abstract
Created in 2018, "Cubed" stands as a pure testament to the joy of spontaneous creation and process-driven abstraction. Unlike other abstract works in my portfolio that may draw thematic references from specific events, music, or movies, this piece is entirely non-referential. It was born out of a fluid, intuitive studio practice, utilizing the leftover colors and paints gathered during the creation of contemporary artworks from that period. The composition of Cubed features an energetic, stained-glass mosaic of canary yellow, rich orange, deep violet, and warm ochre blocks. A winding periwinkle blue channel cuts vertically through the layout, creating a cool counterweight to the intense warmth of the surrounding blocks.
The structural definition of the piece comes from the thick, bold black lines framing each color block, which were applied using Sharpies at the very end of the painting process to lock the puzzle into place. These stark black outlines contrast beautifully with the organic, visible transitions of the acrylic paint underneath, highlighting the physical texture of the canvas. This painting represents the freedom of simply having fun with materials and working through layers of paint until arriving at that distinct, instinctual sense that the canvas is finally complete. It captures a vibrant snapshot of a specific time in the studio, celebrating the natural evolution of color, form, and containment.
