Mixed Media (Acrylic, Ink and Collage) on Cardstock

2026

This mixed media artwork, titled "Missed Fortune," serves as a deeply layered visual commentary on chance, destiny, and the elusive nature of guidance in the modern age. The composition plays on the ironic double meaning of its title, exploring both the literal slivers of advice we seek from mass-produced wisdom and the metaphorical "missed fortunes" of moments unseized. Set against a dramatic, highly textured field of deep charcoal blacks, hot magenta pinks, and burning oranges, the piece immediately establishes an atmospheric tension. The abstract background behaves like a chaotic cosmic backdrop, evoking the unpredictable currents of life where path and purpose are constantly being rewritten.

The conceptual core of the piece is anchored by the physical collage elements visible in "Missed Fortune". Arranged vertically down the canvas like a series of scattered signs are five distinct fortunes slips, salvaged from the core of fortune cookies. Their generic, mass-manufactured phrases—such as "Patience is the road to true happiness" and "Many possibilities are open to you - work a little harder"—stand out in sharp, linear contrast against the organic, sweeping brushstrokes beneath them. By isolating these small strips of paper, the artwork highlights our universal human desire to find profound, personal direction in the most standardized of places, turning a cheap novelty into an object of quiet contemplation.

Through an interplay of techniques the artwork beautifully documents a sense of obscuring and discovering. Swirling over and under the paper fortunes is a central, ghost-like shape of oceanic blue and deep green paint that cuts across the composition, partially veiling the text like a heavy mist or passing time. Circular, gold-ringed celestial motifs frame the left and bottom edges, anchoring the abstract space with a sense of cosmic order. Ultimately, "Missed Fortune" balances vibrant, energetic color with a melancholic introspection, forcing the viewer to confront the beautifully chaotic void that exists between the generic paths laid out for us and the authentic lives we actually live.
