"Kung Fu Window" was born from pure serendipity and the resourceful habit of never letting good paint go to waste. While working in the studio, laying out early sketchbook pages across the floor to catch excess color, a single sheet received a vibrant coat of yellow spray paint. Set down to dry, the page caught the afternoon light in a split second of unexpected alignment, instantly turning an ordinary scrap into an impromptu canvas waiting for a spark.
As the sun hit the window of my mother's home, the silhouette of a small ceramic kung fu kicking sculpture sitting on the sill cast a striking shadow across the floor, framed sharply by the heavy iron bars protecting the glass. Recognizing the fleeting moment, I grabbed a brush and rapidly traced the contours of the leaping warrior and the stark geometric lines of the security grate before the light shifted. The resulting image captures that dynamic burst of spontaneous energy, frozen in bold strokes against the brilliant yellow backdrop.
Beyond the happy accident of its creation, the piece serves as an authentic cultural time capsule of growing up in 1990s Hialeah. The window bars—an unmistakable fixture of local neighborhood life designed to guard against break-ins—blend seamlessly with the playful defiance of the martial artist mid-kick. Equal parts urban memory and artistic luck, "Kung Fu Window" celebrates the everyday grit, nostalgia, and spontaneous magic that happen when life and light converge.
