The Butter Club
The Butter Club
Mixed Media (Acrylic, Collage) On Canvas
6” x 9”
2026

Created in 1998, "The Butter Club" is an energetic, mixed-media acrylic and collage painting measuring 6" x 9" that captures the raw spirit of an unforgettable era in South Florida music. The piece stands as a vibrant tribute to The Butter Club, a powerhouse band that rocked Miami in the late 1990s with their trippy, trance-inducing rock sound and unforgettable live shows. As noted by the Miami New Times in 1999, their performances were pure magic—commanding crowds after midnight, having technical crews kill the stage lights because "we're all friends here," and leaving hundreds of fans mesmerized in the dark.

The artwork uniquely immortalizes the band by embedding individual band members directly into show tickets, creating a rhythmic and personal visual archive of their stage presence. Adding deep personal significance to the piece, the tickets were designed by my close friend and talented artist Gilbert Lopez, marking this painting as one of our earliest creative collaborations. Built in three distinct textural tiers, the composition features an expressive, abstract painted background that provides atmospheric grit, overlaid with the physical band tickets and elevated collage elements to give the intimate canvas remarkable dimension and movement.

By fusing local music history, graphic memorabilia, and tactile print layers, "The Butter Club" preserves the gritty vitality of Miami’s underground rock scene before the turn of the millennium. It serves not only as a portrait of musicians at the height of their creative relevance, but also as a testament to lifelong creative brotherhood and the timeless power of art and music to inspire.
