The Inside Joke > Down To The Bones

In this latest artwork, "First Birthday," I continue the exploration of complex psychological themes as part of an ongoing Halloween series, "The Inside Joke." This journey began last year with the very well-received piece, "The Inside Joke: The Bare Bones of Narcissism." For this year's run, titled "The Inside Joke: Down To The Bones," I was determined to revisit the foundation laid in last year's series and expand its scope well beyond narcissism into other "dark" areas of the psyche and human condition.

"First Birthday" is an intentional step back to the point where most personality disorders begin: the intricate landscape of early childhood. The piece tells the profound and poignant story of a little girl and the specific challenges of growing up without a father. The absence of a father figure can deeply shape a person's emotional development, relationships, and worldview, creating lasting impacts that vary widely depending on individual circumstances and available support systems.

The painting illustrates how some children develop narcissistic traits as a critical defense mechanism against severe emotional neglect, harsh criticism, abuse, or trauma. They create a false, perfect self to hide a deep, inner shame. While some follow this path, others fall into depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and other forms of psychological distress. With "First Birthday," I translate this specific developmental vulnerability into a chillingly poignant visual, as the innocent celebration of a child’s birth is juxtaposed with the stark, inner-revealing symbolism of the skeleton, highlighting the fragile foundation upon which a life is built.
