Down To The Bones
As part of the collection "The Inside Joke: Down To The Bones," "The Life Of The Party" directly expands on the exploration that began last year with the well-received exhibition, "The Inside Joke: The Bare Bones of Narcissism." While this year's series broadens its scope into other dark corners of the human condition, this piece intentionally revisits narcissism to shine a light on its most vulnerable, overlooked victims: the children. It delves into the cyclic nature of self-absorption, exposing how parental neglect creates ripples that echo across generations.
This work serves as a poignant tribute to all the unmet needs, missing affection, and unfulfilled desires for a heroic parental figure who instead remains entirely consumed by themselves. It speaks to every child caught in the shadow of excessive self-regard—from those who never truly get to know their parents to the ones left waiting endlessly on living room couches at adult parties, wondering when they will finally go home.
By pairing stark, skeletonized imagery with themes of lost innocence and emotional abandonment, "The Life Of The Party" confronts the tragic irony of a parent chasing center stage while leaving their child behind. It honors the silent endurance of those young lives, transforming hidden childhood isolation into a powerful moment of recognition and empathy.
