Mail Art South Florida
The mixed media artwork titled "Cafe Blues" captures a deeply personal and soulful expression of longing, friendship, and South Florida culture. Born out of a phone call from a dear friend named Lisa who had moved north, the piece embodies the profound homesickness that strikes when leaving behind the flavors and rituals of home. As she listed off everything she missed most—from strong Cuban coffee and warm croquetas to sweet pastelitos de guayaba y queso—the conversation inspired a housewarming gesture: sending her an iconic Cuban cafetera. That tangible connection became the creative spark for this expressive mash-up, transforming a simple kitchen staple into a vessel of memory and comfort.
The visual composition in "Cafe Blues" layers nostalgia with gritty, tactile artistic techniques. At the center stands the bold silhouette of a classic Cuban cafetera, overlaid with a handwritten note echoing those cherished cravings for Café Pilón and bakery treats. Surrounding the pot is a textured wash of weathered blues and teals, splattered with warm coffee-toned droplets that resemble authentic coffee rings and spills. This interplay of expressive fluid washes, mixed media collage, and organic stains gives the artwork a lived-in, intimate quality, as if created right at the kitchen table over a freshly brewed colada.
While "Cafe Blues" stands apart as a standalone personal tribute rather than a direct postcard exchange, it aligns seamlessly with the spirit of sharing local culture, people, and traditions that drives my participation in the the global Mail Art Movement. By translating a heartfelt story of friendship and culinary nostalgia into a visual narrative, the piece celebrates how everyday South Florida rituals travel across state lines to ground us in where we come from. Sending or displaying this piece shares a piece of the 305's soul, proving that no matter how far away life takes you, the warmth and comfort of home are never more than a cafetera away.
