My latest portrait, titled "Jules Winnfield,” captures Samuel L. Jackson in one of his most powerful and recognizable cinematic roles from Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction. Leveling his pistol directly toward the viewer with an intense, unyielding stare, the portrait captures the high-stakes tension and fierce intensity of his legendary interrogation scene. The piece stands as a gritty homage to a classic 90s antihero and a masterclass in cinematic attitude.
Layered across the upper canvas and background is bold, hand-painted lettering in a bright turquoise hue, writing out his iconic, aggressive line: "English, motherf***er, do you speak it!?" The dynamic typography curves around his silhouette and gun barrel, blending directly into the architectural background lines. By weaving this memorable piece of dialogue directly into the composition, the artwork allows Jackson's unforgettable delivery to define the visual structure and electric mood of the piece.
Technically, the piece relies on a deep, distressed gel plate background featuring electric cyan and deep indigo blue washes set against subtle gold undertones. Heavy black print textures, stippling, and cross-hatching sculpt his dark suit jacket, tie, signature Jheri curls, and intense facial features. "Jules Winnfield" stands as a bold, atmospheric tribute to a pop-culture icon and an indelible moment in film history.
