Word on the Street
My latest piece, "I Believe In a Thing Called Love", is an 8.5" x 11" mixed media exploration created with ink and acrylic on photopaper. This work merges the raw energy of graffiti with the layered complexity of abstract expressionism. The background features rich olive green splashes colliding with a regal, swirling gold ornamental pattern—creating a textured, almost baroque chaos. Anchoring the vertical space are two bold, salmon-toned brushstrokes, setting a dynamic contrast against four wide horizontal bands of dark copper and brown that stabilize the composition with earthy weight.
Layered atop these elements are the titular words, scrawled in an orange fat-tipped Sharpie with unmistakable urgency: "I Believe In a Thing Called Love". Each letter is traced in white paint marker for luminous clarity and then outlined in shimmering gold, echoing the background’s opulence while reinforcing the message's emotional sincerity. The piece captures a tension between control and spontaneity, ornament and grit, love and defiance. It’s a visual anthem for belief in feeling, rendered with texture, color, and conviction.
