Dia De Los Muertos
"La Llorona" is an 8.5" x 11" gel plate transfer with acrylic on cardstock, capturing the haunting beauty of a woman adorned for El Día de los Muertos. Her skeletal face is painted in a soft bone beige, standing in stark contrast to the fiery reds, oranges, and hot pinks surrounding her. The background shimmers in metallic aqua and deep blue, creating an ethereal glow that feels both otherworldly and deeply rooted in tradition. To add a unique natural texture, I pressed a rose into the background, leaving behind subtle imprints—faint echoes of life and loss, love and remembrance.
This piece embodies the duality of La Llorona—a spirit caught between worlds, forever mourning yet undeniably beautiful. The colors pulse with energy, yet her gaze is solemn, almost lost in the veil between the living and the dead. Día de los Muertos is a celebration, a moment to honor those who came before us, and this artwork is my tribute to that spirit—vibrant, textured, and layered with meaning, much like the traditions that inspired it.
