Word on the Street
“We Make Love So Complicated” is a 6" x 6.25" acrylic painting on cardboard that explores the emotional entanglements we often create around something that should be simple and pure. The piece features a blue background—calm and reflective—layered with thick, peach-colored horizontal brushstrokes that cut through the stillness like waves of emotion. On top of these strokes, the titular phrase is scrawled in raw orange marker, then outlined in a steady blue and traced with a sharp, vibrant lime green. The layering of text and color becomes symbolic of the way we build walls, meanings, and mixed signals over love until it becomes nearly unrecognizable.
This work is both personal and universal—an abstract reflection on how we layer expectations, fears, and past hurts onto relationships. The use of cardboard as the canvas speaks to the fragility and disposability we sometimes assign to love, despite its depth. “We Make Love So Complicated” doesn’t offer answers, just a raw and honest expression of how tangled the heart can become.
