This is my latest painting titled "Ras Termz," an eight and a half by eleven inch acrylic and gel plate transfer on cardstock. It was inspired by a powerful image of my friend James, an incredibly talented artist whose work has long blended graffiti, fine art, cultural symbolism, and spiritual themes. I used a new gel plate layering method for this piece, starting with one of his own graffiti prints and laying red paint beneath it to create a textured rusty yellow orange background. This technique allowed me to merge his portrait with the essence of his artwork, resulting in a piece that captures both the visual and personal layers of his identity.
James and I met back in high school when he was already deep into the graffiti world. Since then, his art has continued to evolve in ways that feel both raw and refined, always pushing boundaries. This painting is one of two works I created around this theme, with the second set to be released as part of my Mail Art Movement contributions. Through these pieces, I hope to share not just a portrait of an artist, but a visual tribute to the cultural fabric of South Florida and the people who shape it.
