The “2” in this piece represents the “2” in “213,” our apartment number back in the day. The background is layered with real club fliers from iconic Miami spots in the 1990s, grounding the work in a very specific time and place. Woven into the background writing is a personal narrative—snapshots of our lives during that era. One example, “Winn-Dixie after hours,” refers to our late-night grocery runs just before closing time, when we’d buy deli and bakery items marked down to half-price. On our extremely tight budget, those discounted finds were what kept us fed. Without those nightly missions, we probably would’ve gone hungry. This painting is a tribute to those raw, formative years—full of struggle, creativity, and survival.
