Black Tree
Black Tree
Acrylic on Paper
10.5” x 13.5”
1992

The Black Tree was created using leftover paint from other projects and sits somewhere between an abstract work and a color study. It originated from one of my early art books and is actually painted on the reverse side of another piece, Super Model. Completed around Christmas of 1992, the tree-like shape and the repeating pattern in the background give it a subtle holiday feel—almost like vintage wrapping paper.

Looking back, I probably would’ve chosen to keep the focus on smaller tree forms rather than letting the large central shape dominate the composition. But that’s part of the process—you experiment, reflect, and grow. Every piece teaches you something.
