Fantasy, Mythology and Science Fiction
"Neon Vampire" is my newest work, an acrylic painting on cardstock measuring 8.5 by 11 inches and created through the use of a gel plate. Each year I begin a countdown to Halloween on my social media, and this piece opens the celebration for this season. It is both a tribute and a reflection on the era of vampire films from the 1980s and 1990s, a time when the genre carried a distinct style and atmosphere. Movies such as The Lost Boys and Fright Night helped define that look, balancing menace with allure, and this painting seeks to capture that same spirit in a contemporary yet nostalgic way.
The figure is painted in pastel purple skin tones with neon pink and electric blue highlights that echo the bold visual culture of the time. The flat pastel colors dominate the composition until the viewer reaches the eyes. Here, the palette shifts to a more luminous combination of purple, gold, and orange, layered with an iridescent glaze that draws the gaze in. The eyes shimmer as though alive, conjuring the cinematic moments in vampire lore when one is caught, entranced, and unable to look away. This contrast between flat and glowing surfaces is what gives Neon Vampire its tension, its energy, and its connection to the timeless fascination with the vampire myth.
