My latest painting, "Scars", is an 8.5" x 11" acrylic on cardstock piece created using a gel plate technique. It features the tender, pastel portrait of a beautiful woman with pink cheeks, soft freckles, and captivating light green and aqua eyes. A single rose adorns her hair, set against a serene aqua background. During the pull from the gel plate, the paper tore—a moment that initially felt like failure. But instead of discarding the piece, I embraced the accident, recognizing the raw truth in that flaw. I painted in bold black "scars" across the torn areas, letting the imperfection become part of the narrative.
"Scars" speaks to the resilience woven into every human story. Whether visible or invisible, we all carry marks from what we've endured. The scars on her face aren’t there to diminish her beauty—they amplify it, telling a deeper story of strength, survival, and grace. This painting is a meditation on the idea that our truest beauty often comes not from what’s untouched, but from what’s been torn and still stands luminous.
