Generation Advice
This is my latest artwork, "Make Sure The Ones Around You Know You Love Them," and it is the second piece in my new series "Generational Advice." Each work in this series features an elder drawn in a comic and street art style illustration, paired with a word bubble carrying advice that has been passed down through conversations with grandparents, family, or friends. For this one, I set the grandmother caricature against a pastel abstract background, which evokes the comfort and nostalgia of an old familiar home. The words serve as both a gentle reminder and a powerful directive, urging us not to take love for granted or assume that the people around us already know what we feel.
The message resonates even more deeply for me now, as it comes from recent personal experiences of loss and regret. I have lost a best friend I wish I had spent more time with, a close friend of mine lost her younger brother far too soon, and just yesterday another friend told me about the heartbreaking loss of their teenage son. These moments are devastating reminders that life is fragile, unpredictable, and often unfair. They are also reminders that the most important things in life are often the simplest—letting people know how much they mean to us.
This piece is not only about grief but also about hope and action. It is about calling your mom, hugging your kids, fishing with dad, apologizing when you should, saying "I love you" without hesitation, and being present in the lives of those you hold dear. "Make Sure The Ones Around You Know You Love Them" is a visual note to all of us to live without regret, to love openly and often, and to treasure the gift of having one another while we still can.
