Fantasy, Mythology and Science Fiction
This is my latest artwork, "Artificial Chamomile," an 8.5" x 11" acrylic on cardstock painting that began as a hand drawn sketch before being transferred to cardstock using the gel plate method. The inspiration came unexpectedly from a TikTok exchange, where someone commented on one of my earlier paintings, "A.I.," questioning if my work was artificial. Anyone who knows me knows that one of my shortcomings is pettiness and an inability to let certain things go, so rather than ignore it, I leaned into the comment and created a response through art. While scrolling through her profile, I came across a striking cosplay of Vi from Arcane, and I decided to reimagine it in my own style, rendering her as a skeleton to fit my Halloween posts.
This piece actually evolved into two artworks because my first attempt tore down the middle during the gel plate pull. Rather than discard it, I embraced the accident, incorporating my original hand drawn sketch to cover the tear, transforming it into a collage that I am equally proud of. For the final "Artificial Chamomile," I chose shimmering maroon paint with accents of pinks and reds set against an orange background, creating a vivid palette that balances warmth and intensity. The skeletonized figure gives a nod to both the spooky season and the themes of reinvention that run through much of my work.
At its core, this artwork is also a reflection on communication, assumptions, and human connection. Instead of accusing or dismissing, there is always room for asking, learning, and engaging with one another. What began as a moment of criticism transformed into an opportunity for dialogue, creativity, and growth. "Artificial Chamomile" carries that spirit with it, reminding us that the world is a richer and more beautiful place when we choose to create, communicate, and share love instead of division.
