“Chester” is my latest painting, created on eight point five by eleven inch cardstock paper using the gel plate method. This portrait of Chester Bennington of Linkin Park was made as part of my November tribute to Mens Health Month and mental illness awareness. His voice and presence left a lasting mark on music, and the impact of his work continues to inspire people across generations. I wanted to honor not only his legacy but also the struggles he faced, which reflect the silent battles that so many men carry alone.
This piece also serves as a call to recognize the reality of mens mental health. Every day in the United States an average of one hundred seven men die by suicide, and in two thousand twenty two more than thirty nine thousand men lost their lives this way. Men account for nearly eighty percent of all suicide deaths despite making up only about half of the population, and their rate of suicide is nearly four times higher than that of women. These numbers are heartbreaking reminders that reaching out can save a life. If you know someone who is struggling please speak up, offer support, and remember that the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is available at any time.
