Imagining Them
"It does not make sense" lives in the space where typography, portraiture, and abstraction collide. I built the surface with intermittent stripes where light and dark blue bleed into red and purple, creating a restless background that refuses to settle. Layered over this are phrases in yellow and white that carry mixed messages. When separated by color, they read as confessions and reflections, one admitting the struggle to make sense of everything, the other echoing the familiar line that the love you give is equal to the love you make, an intentional nod to the Beatles and their enduring words about love and consequence.
Floating above the text is a cut out drawing of a man with a mustache and goatee, originally drawn in pen on paper, then collaged onto the painting and colored over. This figure feels both present and detached, as if caught between identities, much like the words beneath him. By combining drawing, text, and paint, I wanted the piece to feel layered and unresolved, mirroring the way thoughts overlap and contradict one another when clarity is out of reach.
I created this work after a long relationship came to an end, during a time when explanations felt insane, excuses unraveled, and contradictions piled up. The painting wrestles with the impossible task of finding reason in emotional chaos and confronting the reality of an obvious affair that fractured a family. This piece is not about arriving at answers, but about sitting with confusion and acknowledging the weight of love, loss, and truth.
