Knotted is an abstract painting I created on the back of a recycled Elysian Space Dust IPA carton, continuing my effort to turn discarded materials into something meaningful instead of letting them end up in a landfill. Working on this surface felt appropriate for the subject, as the cardboard already carried a history of use and wear. The size of the piece encouraged a physical and intuitive approach, allowing my arm to move freely as I laid down broad strokes and layered color.

The looping blue lines became the core of the composition, crossing and folding into themselves as if tracing a thought that cannot fully resolve. Beneath them, warmer tones of tan, rust, and soft gray push forward and recede, creating depth and tension. To me, these intersecting forms represent moments of mental or emotional entanglement, when ideas, feelings, or circumstances become tightly bound and difficult to separate. The paint is not neat or controlled, because the experience of being knotted rarely is.

The meaning of this piece lives in that sense of movement without release. The lines suggest connection, struggle, and persistence all at once, holding together even as they strain against one another. By using a repurposed surface, I wanted the work to reflect resilience and transformation, showing how something overlooked can carry complexity and value. Knotted invites the viewer to sit with their own entanglements and recognize that tension itself can be a form of structure.
