Mighty Mason
Mighty Mason
Acrylic on Cardstock
8.5” x 11”
2025

This painting is one of two I created for my best friend and his sons, and it introduces the world to the Mighty Mason. At first glance it is a simple portrait, but I knew from the beginning that no image could fully capture what makes this child so remarkable. I worked to balance softness and strength, allowing the colors and textures to reflect both innocence and resilience. The green and yellow tones surrounding him suggest growth and hope, while his calm expression holds a quiet confidence that immediately drew me in as I painted.

Mason has already faced more than most people do at such a young age. His diagnosis with diabetes was devastating for his parents and everyone who loves him, yet the way he has handled it has been nothing short of extraordinary. Instead of fear, he shows courage. Instead of retreating, he helps his parents and meets each day with a love of life that feels contagious. As I worked on this portrait, I kept thinking about how strength does not always look loud or dramatic. Sometimes it lives in small steady moments and brave smiles.

For me this painting is about redefining what a hero looks like. Mason does not wear a cape, but his spirit is indomitable and his heart is powerful. I wanted this piece to honor that strength and to remind viewers that heroism can exist in the quiet determination of a child facing something difficult with grace. I also hope it encourages compassion and action, especially in supporting research that can help children like Mason live full and healthy lives.
