Collaborations
"Lago" was born out of a quiet, transient moment in a hotel room, evolving into a spontaneous collaboration between myself and my toddler son. Using a simple memo pad found on the nightstand at the Lago Mar Beach Resort as our shared canvas, we allowed creativity to flow without an agenda. His contribution—the frenetic, uninhibited scribbles in dark ink—forms the central, raw energy of the piece, capturing that unfiltered expression unique to childhood. My role was to facilitate and support that energy, adding washes of vibrant green to frame his chaotic marks with color and intent, turning a fleeting scribble into a permanent record of our interaction.
Beneath the surface of this delicate hotel note lies the structural core of my ongoing artistic mission: sustainability through creative reuse. The memo pad is mounted and collaged onto the back of a flattened Uncle Ben’s Ready Rice box, which provides the rigid substrate for the artwork. This act of repurposing everyday trash into "high art" is central to my practice. By elevating materials otherwise destined for the landfill, I challenge the viewer to reconsider our relationship with waste and recognize the aesthetic potential in what we so easily discard.
Ultimately, "Lago" is a study in contrasts and unexpected connections. It bridges the gap between the ephemeral nature of a vacation, the permanence of domestic waste, the innocence of a child’s mark-making, and the deliberate structuring of an adult artist. The final framing, with its rough black and gold borders, serves to enshrine this humble conjunction of materials. It is a testament to finding art everywhere—in a messy moment with my son, on discarded cardboard, and in the lines that refuse to stay within boundaries.
