"Mar" serves as the second movement in a collaborative exploration between myself and my toddler son. Like its companion piece, it began as a spontaneous interaction on a hotel memo pad at the Lago Mar Beach Resort. In this iteration, the energy of the collaboration is even more pronounced; my son’s dark, sweeping pen strokes anchor the composition with a raw, primal honesty that only a child can provide. I layered translucent washes of emerald and seafoam green over his marks, not to hide them, but to provide a rhythmic, oceanic atmosphere that gives his "chaos" a place to rest.
The physical foundation of this work is as important as the marks on its surface. Continuing my commitment to environmental stewardship, this piece is mounted on the cardboard of a discarded Uncle Ben’s Ready Rice box. By utilizing the reverse side of consumer packaging, I am intentionally diverting "trash" from the landfill and transforming it into a vessel for fine art. There is a profound irony in using a mass-produced, industrial item to support a deeply personal, one-of-a-kind moment of father-son connection.
Ultimately, "Mar" is a reflection on the beauty of the discarded and the fleeting. It captures a specific moment in time—a family vacation, a shared drawing, and the mundane items we leave behind—and elevates them into something permanent. It challenges the viewer to see the world through a dual lens: one that recognizes the potential in every scrap of paper and one that finds artistic genius in the uninhibited scribbles of a child. It is a testament to the idea that art isn't found in expensive supplies, but in the intention and the relationships we build.
