Brown Pelican
Brown Pelican
Acrylic on Cardstock
5” x 7”
2026

This is my latest painting, Brown Palican, created as part of my continued involvement in the mail art movement. Working at this small, intimate scale allows me to stay loose and responsive, focusing on gesture, texture, and instinct rather than perfection. The piece came together through layered marks and restrained color, letting the form of the bird emerge naturally from the surface rather than forcing it into clarity.

My participation in the mail art movement is rooted in connection and storytelling. Through these works, I aim to share the animals, plants, people, and cultures that helped make and shape South Florida. Sending these pieces out into the world feels like placing small fragments of place and memory into someone else’s hands, allowing art to travel, be touched, and exist outside traditional gallery walls.

The Brown Pelican is a constant presence in South Florida, both ordinary and iconic. It is a bird that carries a quiet resilience, shaped by wind, water, and survival along the coast. In this painting, I wanted to honor that familiarity and strength, capturing not a perfect likeness but the feeling of encountering this bird in its natural environment, steady and unbothered, woven into the everyday rhythm of life here.
