I am sharing my latest painting titled Magaly a Memory In Pastels which belongs to a two part series dedicated to the grandmother of a close friend. This project began when my friend shared a timeless photograph of her grandmother resting on a limestone fence in the rural countryside of old Cuba. The image possessed a rare and quiet beauty that immediately inspired me to capture her spirit through my own artistic lens as a tribute to her life and the history she represents.
For this particular piece I chose to work with pastels and muted tones to evoke a sense of nostalgia and peace. As the work progressed the colors and soft edges began to take on a distinct anime feel reminiscent of the classic style seen in The Wind Rises by Hayao Miyazaki. I felt that this specific aesthetic perfectly complemented the dreamy atmosphere of the Cuban landscape while highlighting the elegance of her posture against the weathered stone of the wall.
The process of creating this work was deeply personal as I aimed to honor a legacy that remains very much alive in the hearts of those who knew her. By blending traditional portraiture with the soft and atmospheric qualities of a cinematic landscape I hope to have created a lasting memory that celebrates her journey. It has been a privilege to transform such a precious family photograph into this artistic expression of love and remembrance.
