I wanted this painting to capture the soft yet striking intensity found in her early ballads such as Crazy For You. There is a certain vulnerability in her expression from that period that often gets overshadowed by her more provocative moments. By focusing on this specific look, I aimed to strip away the noise of her later fame and return to the raw essence of her presence. The goal was to evoke a sense of nostalgia while also celebrating the timeless quality of her gaze, which still feels as magnetic and relevant today as it did decades ago.
The work features a heavily distressed surface where the skin tones are rendered through a fine pebbled texture that gives the portrait a vintage quality. I chose to use a vibrant splash of magenta behind her head to create a sharp contrast against the neutral and gritty tones of the rest of the canvas.
