Originally written by the Arrows and later catapulted to global fame by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts it remains one of the most recognizable tracks in history. The steady and driving beat paired with her gravelly vocals creates a sense of pure liberation that makes you want to turn the volume up to the maximum. It is a song about the universal language of rhythm and the simple yet profound joy of finding yourself in the music which is exactly what I wanted to translate onto the canvas.
In the painting itself I have depicted Joan Jett clutching her guitar with a look of intense focus and defiance. She is rendered in high contrast black and white which makes her image pop against the chaotic and fiery red background that is speckled with white and gold splattered paint. The texture of the work is intentionally gritty and weathered to mirror the raw sound of her music and the legendary status of her career. I wanted to create a visual explosion of energy that feels like a live performance frozen in time where the passion for rock and roll is the only thing that matters.
