I am sharing my latest painting titled Partner, a portrait of Carlos Hechavarria, as we approach Cancer Awareness Day. This piece is a deeply personal tribute to a man who was my mentor and the older brother I found later in life. We spent many years working side by side where he shared his wisdom on life and the profound importance of fatherhood. While cancer took his physical presence from us his light remains vibrant through the legacy of his children and the memories of everyone he touched. He was a man defined by his actions and a love for living that continues to inspire our entire crew whenever we gather.

The title of this work comes from his signature phrase which served as a way to bring people together. Using the word partner was a unique way to disarm others while offering a term of endearment that suggested we were all in this together. There is a subtle western nod within the composition to reflect that specific charm he carried so effortlessly. As a fine artist, I wanted to capture the essence of a man whose family has grown into a beautiful picture of love and strength. It is a testament to the fact that great men leave behind more than just memories because they leave a foundation for others to build upon.

I can almost hear him looking at this portrait from above and offering his typical mix of kindness and humor. He would likely tell me the painting is special but then joke about needing more muscle and less gray in the hair. That spirit of joy and lightheartedness is exactly what I aimed to preserve on the canvas. I miss you old friend and I hope this piece serves as a fitting tribute to the impact you had on my world. Thank you for being the partner we all needed in our lives.
