I am excited to share my latest painting titled Alternative Yuset With Madonna Lilies. This piece is the second in my series of portraits focusing on my good friend who I originally met by chance at a local coffee shop. As anyone who knows her will tell you she is a wonderful human being a great mother and what you would truly call a classy lady with an old soul. Over the years we have shared many laughs over her strong dislike for tattoos. I decided to take our ongoing banter to the canvas and create this alternative version of her where she is entirely mocked up in ink.
While the tattoos are purely a playful fabrication her intoxicating smile and her deep love for Madonna lilies are very much real. I wanted to capture the genuine warmth of her expression against the stark and gritty texture of the piece. The composition relies heavily on the sharp contrast between the dark shadows of her portrait and the bright pure white of the lilies she is holding. The prominent tattoo of a face on her shoulder adds a layer of unexpected edginess that perfectly juxtaposes her naturally elegant demeanor.
Creating this piece also represents a significant evolutionary step for me in my gel plate art. For the very first time I incorporated a palette knife alongside my usual brushes to manipulate the paint on the plate. This new technique allowed me to achieve the deeply weathered and heavily textured look that defines the background of this portrait. Operating as Elvis Santana Art I am constantly looking to push my creative boundaries and blend personal storytelling with experimental methods.
