This is my latest painting, “You Know I’n No Good,” a portrait of Amy Winehouse. I wanted to capture more than her likeness. I wanted to hold onto the vulnerability and defiance that lived in her eyes. Her story was layered with brilliance, pain, love, and rebellion, and I tried to let all of that breathe through the texture of the canvas.
The handwritten lyrics surrounding her are meant to feel immersive, like thoughts echoing in a crowded room. I used muted tones to ground her presence, then broke through with bold reds and deep blues to reflect passion and turmoil. The heart, the stare, the raw brushwork all speak to the tension between strength and fragility. Nothing about her spirit felt polished, so I allowed the painting to remain honest and imperfect.
As the artist, this piece is my tribute to a voice that was fearless and unforgettable. She owned her flaws in a way that was both tragic and powerful. In painting her, I was thinking about fame, love, self awareness, and the cost of living out loud. This work is about remembering her humanity as much as her music.
