Fantasy, Mythology and Science Fiction
“Hell Bent Hannah, Hand On The Pump” is my take on the mythic outlaw spirit that lives somewhere between folklore and tall tale. Hannah stands before us as a skeletal gunslinger, calm and confident beneath a wide brimmed hat. Her braids fall over the shoulders of a deep red dress, and behind her a glowing circle rises like a harsh desert sun or a halo earned through a life lived hard and fast. She is not frightened by death because she already wears its bones. Instead she carries herself with the quiet certainty of someone who has walked straight through danger more than once and come out the other side with a story to tell.
The title nods to the classic phrase about a gunfighter being ready to draw at any moment, hand already resting on the revolver. Hannah is caught in that exact pause between stillness and action. Her bony fingers curl around the grip with the casual familiarity of someone who knows exactly what the weapon means. The gesture is less about violence and more about resolve. She is hell bent in the sense that nothing will turn her from her path. In this moment she is both legend and warning, a figure who belongs to the dusty crossroads where justice, revenge, and survival blur together.
Visually the painting leans into dramatic contrast and weathered texture. The red dress and hat burn against the darker ground while the pale bones cut sharply through the composition. The round golden form behind her head pushes the image toward iconography, giving Hannah the presence of a saint of the frontier or perhaps a patron spirit of stubborn independence. I wanted the surface to feel worn and gritty as if the story had been carried through time, whispered from saloon to campfire until the woman herself faded into legend and only Hell Bent Hannah remained.
