Aqua Catrina
Aqua Catrina

2026

This is my latest painting titled Aqua Catrina. With this work I wanted to continue my exploration of the Day of the Dead theme by shifting the emotional palette toward cooler and more fluid tones. While my previous Catrina pieces often emphasized fiery reds and warm ochres this portrait focuses on deep teals and vibrant blues to evoke a sense of calm and mystery. I am fascinated by how the skull makeup can be reinterpreted through different color stories to highlight various facets of the spirit and the afterlife.

The artistic process for this piece involved a meticulous application of stippled textures to create a grainy weathered look that has become a staple of my style. I chose to use a striking aqua green for the eye sockets and lips which provides a luminous contrast against the stark white of the face. The crown of deep red roses remains a traditional touch but the overall composition is dominated by the swirling blues and darker shadows that frame the subject. This juxtaposition of a cold color palette with a traditionally warm floral arrangement creates a unique visual tension that I find very compelling.

By creating Aqua Catrina I am further developing a series that honors cultural heritage while pushing the boundaries of my own technical expression. Every line and dot is an intentional choice meant to invite the viewer to look closer and find the humanity behind the symbolic mask. I hope this painting resonates with those who appreciate the delicate balance between beauty and the macabre. Thank you for following my creative journey as I continue to document the stories and symbols that define my artistic vision.
