Mail Art South Florida
My ongoing participation in the mail art movement is a truly fulfilling practice. This global network of artists who exchange work through the postal system allows for an authentic and accessible form of artistic dialogue. By sending physical pieces, I feel a tangible connection to others around the world, transcending borders. It is a vital and direct way to share art outside of traditional gallery spaces. I have dedicated much of my recent artistic effort to exploring the rich culture and diverse people that define South Florida, and mail art provides a perfect channel for this expression.
For this painting, I decided to return to a subject that is deeply evocative for me, the Miami skyline. The specific perspective I chose is based on a photograph I took many years ago. Looking back at that image, I wanted to capture not just the physical structures, but also the vibrant and sometimes chaotic energy that makes this city so memorable. The process of translating a personal, historical photograph into this painted form adds a layer of memory and time to the final work, anchoring it in a specific personal history within the broader South Florida context.
This is my latest painting and part of my continued involvement in the mail art movement where my work explores and shares the people, culture, history and more that make South Florida such a unique and amazing place to live. For this painting I painted the Miami skyline using a picture I took years ago. I chose to render it with a nocturnal theme, using heavy, visible brushstrokes and intense color saturation to create a deeply textured and expressive surface. The juxtaposition of deep purples and blues for the water and dark sky against the saturated yellows, oranges, and teals of the city lights creates a raw, visceral visual impact. The messy, layered application is intended to capture the palpable energy and unique atmosphere of the city across the water.
