How You Gonna Win?
How You Gonna Win?

With "How You Gonna Win," I wanted to confront the central question of this series head-on by turning the lyrics of Lauryn Hill’s "Doo Wop (That Thing)" into a literal visual interrogation. This piece serves as the thesis for the collection, stripping away the metaphorical layers to focus on that singular, heavy inquiry. By painting my own bold, gestural typography directly over the mechanical, block-printed words "HOW YOU GONNA WIN," I’m creating a visual echo that forces the viewer to look past the surface level of success and question the foundation of their own ambitions.

Technically, the work is an exercise in high-contrast tension. I chose a vibrant, sunset-orange background that feels both urgent and warm, pushing against a deep, mossy green base that suggests an earthy, unrefined reality. The main text is rendered in a saturated navy, outlined with a sharp, neon-lime green that makes the letters vibrate and "pop" as if they are illuminated from behind. The "connect-the-dots" style of the lettering is a deliberate choice, symbolizing the way we try to map out our lives and bridge the gap between our current state and our eventual goals.

For me, this artwork represents the crossroads of identity and performance. I left the original black typography visible beneath the paint to show that society’s questions are always present, but our response to them—how we "paint" our own path—is what truly defines us. The weathered textures and scuffed edges of the background give the piece a sense of history, as if the struggle to answer this question has been ongoing for a long time. It’s a piece about the grit required to win on your own terms, rather than simply playing the game by everyone else's rules.
