With "How Empty It Must Be These Days," I wanted to explore the hollow nature of chasing status and external validation. As part of my series utilizing Lauryn Hill’s "Doo Wop (That Thing)" lyrics, this piece specifically targets the internal void that remains when we prioritize the "win" over our own spiritual substance. By placing my hand-painted typography over the mechanical, printed words "HOW YOU GONNA WIN," I’m highlighting the irony of succeeding in a world that often demands you leave your soul behind.

Technically, I chose a vibrant, electric blue background to suggest a sense of vast, cold space—a visual representation of that "emptiness." The lettering is rendered in a deep, textured navy with a bright yellow-green outline that feels like it’s glowing or burning through the canvas. I used a structured, "connect-the-dots" style for the words to imply that we are constantly trying to piece together a sense of self from the fragments we have left. The weathered, gritty application of the surrounding greens and ochres adds a layer of organic decay, grounding the modern message in a more timeless, earthy struggle.

For me, this artwork is a moment of quiet reflection amidst the noise of the "Doo Wop" series. While other pieces in the collection are more aggressive or confrontational, this one feels more like an observation of the current state of the world. It’s a question posed to the viewer: after you’ve won the game and gained the world, what is actually left inside? By letting the original lyric "WIN" peek through the layers of paint, I’m reminding us that the pursuit of victory is often the very thing that drains us of our fulfillment.
